Music At Oldbury Wells

Music is an exciting and universal language and the high-quality music education which students receive at Oldbury Wells engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement and pride in their work.

Music is an important part of Oldbury Wells’ school life.  All students study music at Key Stage 3 and can choose to study Btec Music at KS4. Students who wish to learn or continue to play a musical instrument can have lessons from one of our instrumental team and are encouraged to take graded exams as well as play for enjoyment.  The delivery of the music curriculum is enhanced through the use of keyboards, classroom percussion, ICT with the most up to date and sophisticated software, class singing and orchestral and band instruments for those who play.

Extra-curricular music making is at the heart of activities on offer to students at Oldbury Wells. We have a School Band and we are the only school in Shropshire to have a dedicated Guitar Ensemble.  Our successfully established mixed voice vocal group, ‘Encore,’ are in demand and students enjoy performing in school and in our local community throughout the year. We also have a number of student led bands and the provision of space and equipment allows these very self-motivated groups to flourish. Concerts are staged each year to a very high standard most notably recently are our cabaret style showcases, ‘One Night Only’ and ‘Showtime.’ The Music Department have also worked historically with the Drama Department to produce high quality musicals year on year.

Oldbury Wells is also the base for the ‘Bridgnorth Primary Schools Choir launched in September 2013 and directed by OWS Head of Music, Jo Dangerfield. The choir is open to any KS2 pupil from any school across Bridgnorth and rehearses every Thursday after school during term time, 3.30-4.30pm.  The choir boasts a healthy and consistent number of enthusiastic young singers and enjoys regular public performances throughout the year.

Music Department Success

Oldbury Wells Music Department is celebrating a fabulous year of instrumental examination success, students winning medals at Arts Festivals and musicians succeeding in auditions for various Shropshire Youth Music ensembles. The students who are all listed, many of whom are in the photograph are all taught at Oldbury Wells by visiting instrumental and vocal tutors and this is a great opportunity to say thank you to those teachers for their expertise and their commitment to our students ensuring their wonderful success. Congratulations everyone and we look forward to another great year ahead.

Ensemble Success

Congratulations to Huw Morgan, George Frith and Jude Watters, Year 9, have all passed their auditions and are now playing with the Shropshire Training Youth Orchestra on Clarinet, Kit and Trombone respectively. Jude has also passed an audition to play with the Shropshire Youth Big Band and Huw is playing with ‘Sunflower Saxes,’ a local ensemble directed by Sally Barras.

OWS Orchestra, Vocal Group ‘Encore’ and our student bands, ‘River Water’ and ‘All Red’ are all performing at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on 4th July as part of the Shropshire Music Service Gala Week. We are really looking forward to performing at such a prestigious event and venue. Well done to all members of all of our school based ensembles who meet every week during the school year, rehearsing repertoire and developing ensemble skill. I am very proud of you all and thank you all for your commitment and enthusiasm for Music.

Bridgnorth Primary Schools Choir

This lovely choir is still going strong, 5 years since we first launched and we are always hopeful of gaining new members. If you know of anyone in Key Stage 2 from any of our local primary schools, maybe a Brother or Sister, Niece, Nephew, Grandchild or friend and they enjoy singing, please tell them about this choir. We meet every Thursday during term time in the music room at Oldbury Wells and we have a great time learning songs in a whole range of styles, enjoying musical games and preparing performances. Each year we perform at the ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ event and we perform in local concerts. Lots of our past choir members are now students at Oldbury Wells and sing with our Vocal Group ‘Encore’ so it is also a great way into music at Oldbury Wells.
