Some of our students are members of the Northgate Swimmers club in Bridgnorth and this year's West Midlands Championships were a really exciting time for the swimmers. The Bridgnorth team swam well with all making improvements to their personal best times and a few medals were won too. Northgate had the most ever qualifying times in the club's history and spent the two weekends at the championships cheering each other on.
Year 7 student, Jake Fretwell, swam nine events in the first weekend and beat his PB in every one. He earned a fantastic 1st place Gold medal in the 50m freestyle final in a time of 28.68, earning the Midlands Champion title! This now places him 4th in Great Britain. The second weekend saw him continue to dominate in the freestyle sprints with a Gold medal in the 100m. After setting a PB in the heats, Jake clawed his way from 4th place in the final with 20m to go to take the honours with another 2 second improvement. He also achieved a PB in the 200 IM, a PB in the 100m back heats and a further improvement of over 2 seconds in the final in the time of 1:11.53, earning him a Bronze medal. Jake brought home an amazing three medals from the Championships with two ranked as Midlands Champion!
Year 8 student, Francesca Davies, achieved a fantastic PB in the 50m back and improved on heat times in the finals of the 50m and 100m fly and 200m back. She swam well in the 100m back, narrowly missing her PB, and also swam well in the final.
Grace Goldsmith, in Year 9, achieved PBs in the 50m breast, 100m fly and 100m breast events. She also performed well in the 50m fly and 200m breast events.
Harvey Davies, Year 11, who was in the middle of his GCSE exams, swam a solid race in the 400m freestyle event.
Congratulations to our students for the determination, hard work and commitment you have shown to get as far as gaining qualifying times to compete in the West Midlands Championships. That alone is a huge achievement. Well done.
