We held our annual Awards Evening on Tuesday 18th December to celebrate the achievements of students who were awarded their GCSE and A Level results in the summer.
Over 84 students were recognised for their achievements and progress during their time at school.
Notable achievers being:
Best GCSE Results – Lillie Platt, Annabel Martin, Eleanor Caine and Patrick Russell
Best A Level Results – Joel Bridgwater, Jack French and Emily Beynon.
Mr Cook gave a speech as Head of Year for the GCSE achievers and reminisced on some of the funnier moments from the students during the year. Mrs Bishell, Head of Sixth Form, opened her speech reflecting on the former sixth form students by recalling, "This year group have really embodied an example of comprehensive education working well. We had a range of individuals with different abilities, backgrounds, interests and aspirations as well as provocative politics."
The guest speaker for the evening was a former pupil of Oldbury Wells, Mr Toby Hughes, who left in 1997 and collected his very own achievement award on a similar occasion at the school 21 years ago! Mr Hughes gave an inspirational speech in which he extolled the importance of working hard and showing gratitude whenever possible.
Miss Thomas, Principal Deputy, said, "It was perfect for Toby to give a speech remembering his days as a pupil at Oldbury Wells and reflecting on the impact the teachers then had on his chosen career."
Mr Hughes left Oldbury Wells for Cambridge University where he was awarded a First Class Degree, after which he followed a career in teaching and is now the Deputy Head at Wolverhampton Grammar School.
The evening closed with the presentation of the Governors' and Headteacher's prizes awarded to Louis Briggs and Patrick Russell respectively, and music from the school choir, singing pieces from The Greatest Showman.
