Online Safety Advice for Parents
There has recently been a lot of talk in the news about banning social media for under 16s. We all know that there are both benefits and dangers of using online platforms. This is particularly relevant for our young people who often spend long periods of time on phones or tablets.
Please look at the following advice for keeping your children safe online:
- Check privacy settings on apps like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and gaming platforms. Be mindful that these platforms have age guidance for a reason. Please note that TikTok has many features that can be disabled but only if you are aware of them. For example, a user can be added to a group chat without their consent, if they are linked to another user already in that chat. This means they could unwittingly open an image, attachment or follow a link that leads to inappropriate content.
- Set up parental controls if you haven’t already. These guides will show you how:

- Keep conversations open and ask your child what they are enjoying online and remind them to come to you if something feels uncomfortable. The success of criminal groomers often relies on creating a narrative around shame. If a young person has shared an image, they may not wish you to know about, this creates leverage for exploitation. Reassurance is the key to an open and safe dialogue.
Friendships and Wellbeing
Changing schools and holidays can bring new friendships, both online and offline. Most are positive, but if you notice changes like secrecy, unexplained gifts or sudden mood shifts, it is worth checking in gently. These can sometimes be signs that a young person needs extra support.
Also please remember that there are apps that help you control what your child can see online and how long they spend online. OurPact is really good - it is linked to your child's phone by your phone and helps parents manage screen time, block apps/websites, track location etc.
As always, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school:
