Emotional Health and Wellbeing Support
At Oldbury Wells we believe that helping our students stay healthy by supporting their emotional health and wellbeing is vitally important. We recognise that there are challenges for everyone in modern day society and we have created a page to guide our students and families to seek support.
If you are a student and would like support for your mental health and wellbeing, speak to your form tutor in the morning who will make an appointment for you to see one of our Pastoral Support Workers, Mrs Goodison or Mrs Bridgwater. They have the knowledge and expertise to help you with a number of issues you may be struggling with or can signpost you to where you can access help and support. You can also speak with our Senior Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead, Rebecca Lawson, who can also support with any concerns you may have.
Oldbury Wells School have a number of professionals that you can access for a variety of mental health and wellbeing issues. As a school, we now have input from the BeeU ‘Mental Health Support Team’ which deliver evidence based interventions for mild to moderate mental health difficulties, support our school to develop our ‘whole school approach’ to mental health and wellbeing and can liaise with specialist services to help young people get the right support from the right service at the right time.
We have our school counsellor, Jen Brown, who is in school two days a week and offers one-to-one counselling sessions to students needing support with a variety of mental health difficulties.
Oldbury Wells School also offers NHS Social Prescribing to our young people. Social Prescribing link workers that come into school give our young people time, focusing on ‘what matters to them’ to coproduce a personalised care and support plan to support people to take control of their health and wellbeing.
Understanding the importance of mental health and wellbeing and adopting a whole school approach has led Oldbury Wells School to devote one form session a week for every year group to participate in Mental Health and Wellbeing activities. These sessions use evidence based research activities to explore things known to support mental health. These sessions range from practising gratitude and mindfulness activities, offering strategies like meditation and breathing exercises to support mental health and wellbeing alongside guidance and advice on a range of mental health issues. As well as this, mental health and wellbeing issues will be addressed in our curriculum PSHE fortnightly timetabled sessions.
There are also a number of opportunities that can be accessed by all students to help support our young people with their mental health and wellbeing needs. These opportunities range from things such as peer mentoring sessions, group workshops around topics such as self-esteem and body image to regular LGBTQ+ meetings. If you would like further information on what you can access to support you, please speak with one of our pastoral support workers (Mrs Goodison or Mrs Bridgwater) or the Senior Mental Health Lead (Rebecca Lawson).
