WWI Trip Blog Day Three!
Ypres and the Somme
(12th July 2023) Today we moved on from Belgium to France to investigate how World War I developed. Our underground guides brought to life Wellington Quarry and the experiences of British Empire soldiers who tunnelled beneath Arras in 1917, in an attempt to push back the German lines. The rest of the day was focused on key sites from 1916 and the infamous Battle of the Somme. The Lochnager Crater brought to life the destructive firepower of the first day of the Somme. Students marvelled that so many family names could be found on the memorial to the missing at Thiepval. The day came to and end with a walk across the battlefield at Newfoundland Park. Another day of more history adventures and superb commitment from OWS students.
