WWI Trip Blog Day Two!
The Ypres Salient
(11th July 2023) Wow! What a day. Amazing historical sites, excellent interaction with them and lots of super memories. Today we have been exploring the experience of soldiers in the Ypres area. The day began with Essex Farm cemetery; birth place of one of the most famous poems of the war, site of a field dressing station and forever associated with the poppy. Every soldier’s home away from home- Talbot House, moved and inspired in equally measure. How countries choose to remember the Great War was a hotly debated issue at the German Cemetery at Langemark, as well as the colossal British cemetery at Tyne Cott. The restored trench network was fascinating for all at Sanctuary Wood. All students conducted themselves in a manner they could be proud of but only two could place the wreath at the Menin Gate during the Last Post ceremony and that honour fell to Sam Ward and Olivia Burrows who represented the school so very well.
